Growing Up English in an Irish Family in 1960s and ’70s London
Growing up English was complicated when home felt unmistakably Irish.
In 1960s and ’70s London, Chris Campbell came of age between two worlds. At home was a large Irish Catholic family shaped by loyalty, humour, old grievances and the traditions carried across the water. Outside was a changing London, school discipline, football, friendship and the increasing temptation to test every boundary.
Told with humour, honesty and the perspective that comes with age, the memoir looks at family, identity, belonging and the people and places that stay with us long after childhood. At its heart is an English boy raised inside an Irish world, eventually discovering that perhaps he never needed to choose between the two.

About Chris
Chris Campbell is a writer, actor and musician whose creative life has crossed several countries and more than one stage.
Born in England into an Irish family, he grew up in West Hampstead and Kilburn before spending twenty-one years in the United States. His career has included acting for the BBC, writing and theatre work in Los Angeles, and performance across Europe and the Middle East. Frank and Malachy McCourt helped him secure his first professional writing opportunity at the Irish Arts Theatre in Hollywood.

English with a Little Leprechaun Inside is his most personal book, returning to the London childhood and Irish family that shaped much of the life that followed.
