Short Tales, Long Laughs
"Morte d'Arthur," a poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson, recounts the legendary final moments of King Arthur, the noble leader of Camelot, and the dissolution of the Knights of the Round Table. Set against the backdrop of Arthur's last battle, the poem captures the poignant scene where Sir Bedivere, Arthur's last loyal knight, struggles to fulfill the king's dying wish. Arthur commands Bedivere to return his magical sword, Excalibur, to the Lady of the Lake. Bedivere, awestruck by the sword's beauty and significance, hesitates but ultimately obeys. The poem explores themes of loyalty, duty, the end of an era, and the transition from old to new.
Tennyson's rich, evocative language and vivid imagery bring to life the sombre and reflective mood of Arthur's passing and the dawn of a new age. "Morte d'Arthur" is celebrated for its melancholic beauty and its timeless exploration of honour and legacy.
This poetic work is a cornerstone of Arthurian literature, blending myth and history in a narrative that has captivated readers for generations. Presented to a modern audience, Chris Campbell's adaption has combined modern prose with the framework of the original Tennyson poem to portray a touching and moving story about loyalty, friendship, and ultimately, loss. Accompanied by colour illustrations in the style of Medieval Illustrated Manuscripts, Campbell strongly evokes the sentiment and sadness of the final moments of one of history's most famous legends.
